HUGE WEEKEND FOR LOCAL RUNNERS!!

We had amazing reports coming in from all over the country this weekend. Here we will try to break it all down!

2011 WV 5K Champion David McCollom, brom Bridgeport, WV finished 2nd overall out of 7,000+ finishers at the St. Petersburg Half Marathon with an amazing time of 1:10:31 (5:23/mile pace). Searchable Results

9 year old Noah Castro, strikes double gold at the AAU Northern Indoor Championship at Weslyn University in Bloomington,IL. He won the 800m with a photo finish in a time of 2:35. Noah also won gold in the 1500m Boys race destroying the field by over 5 seconds with a winning time of 5:13.31 Full Results

A group of WV runners headed to St. Louis for the USA XC Championships. The big news is Josh Simpson, from Morgantown, WV, finished 3rd in the nation in the 12K XC Race with a time of 36:03 (4:51/mile pace). Matt Schiffbauer, a runner for Marshall University, finished in 21st place with a time of 38:20 (5:09/mile pace) in the men's open division. High School Runner Maggie Drazba, who has several state championships so far ran an amazing time of 21:07 for a 6K and finished 2nd Overall in the Junior Women's Race. According to RunWV.com, that is equivalent of a 17:36 5K! Finally, a WVU Runner, Ahna Lewis finished 22nd overall in the Women's Open 8K race with a time of 29:04. Full Results

Bring back the Mile Campaign

In high school, athletes run the 1600. The mile is only 1609 meters, so why not have high school and college athletes just run the mile instead of the metric distance.

The 1600m in high school makes no sense at all. The international distance is 1500m. Our best guess is the 1600m in high school is the metric equivalent for the mile, so why not start the high school races back 9 meters and call it the mile?

Why should we bring back the mile? Because Americans understand that distance and it can help make the sport as popular as it used to be. I am sure we all have heard of Roger Banister breaking the 4 Minute Mile. Who broke the 4 minute barrier in the 1500 or 1600???

The website BringBackTheMile.com was launched a month or so ago encouraging people to move from the 1500 (In America) and the 1600 (In High School) to the mile to give the general public a better understanding of our sport and make it more meaningful.

The front page has a petition drive to replace the 1600 meters with the Mile at State Championships.

WV 5K Championship

Registration for the 2012 WV 5K Championship is now open.

This year, the WV 5K Championship will feature mile splits, new and different awards, as well as a slew of other great benefits that makes the WV 5K Championship the best road race in our region.

If you register by June 11, we will place your name on your bib number so everyone on the course can cheer you on by name. We will be the first race in our region to offer this to the particpants!

Clara Grandt finishes 7th overall!

In her 2nd marathon ever, WV native Clara Grandt run 2:30:46 for 7th place overall and finishnig right behind Deena Kastor!

Erin Nehus (From Gallipolis, OH) also ran today and finished 23rd overall with a time of 2:37:06. Her father can be seen in many local road races.

This weekend is the Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston, Texas. The men's race will start at 9:00 AM EST and the women begin at 9:15 AM EST.

WV's own Clara Grandt (Who was the 3rd American at Boston with a 2:29) is currently ranked 7th in the olympic Trials!

Where: MU Hall of Fame Cafe - 3rd Ave. Huntington, WV

When: January 16, 2012 - 6:00 PM

Who: Members and the public are welcome

Why: This is a great chance for everyone to get to know each other, plan some group runs together, get your shirt if you have not picked one up yet, and much more!

What: We will be sitting down for dinner together. Everyone can order off the menu at the MU Hall of Fame Cafe (Sorry, the club can not pay for everyone's dinner). After the dinner, we have a couple of small items to discuss (Take ownership of races for insurance purposes and discuss/vote on the mission statement).

Trials Contender: Clara Grandt

This is a nice profile of WV Native Clara Grandt who was the 3rd American Female Finisher at the Boston Marathon behind Desi Davilla and Kara Goucher. Clara ran an impressive 2:29 in her first marathon on the Boston Course.

Did you know she has the 7th fastest qualifing time for the Olympic Trials held next weekend in Houston? Go WV!!!

NYC Marathon to be LIVE on ESPN 2

For the next 5 Years, The NYC Marathon will be shown live on ESPN 2!

The Marathon Olympic Trials will be on NBC next weekend (Tape Delayed) for two full hours but there will be NO LIVE STREAMING of the marathon trials as of right now.
