Bring a Spartan Race to Kentucky
By: Jeff Cain
Spartan Race, arguably the world's premiere obstacle racing series, is gauging interest for a race in the state of Kentucky. For those unaware of Spartan Race, don't make the mistake of equating it with Warrior Dash or Tough Mudder that have held events in the area. Spartan is not a mud run (eg, Warrior Dash), nor is it just a challenge (eg. Tough Mudder). It is a RACE to the very core. Chip-timing with a heinous penalty of 30 burpees for any failed obstacle separates it from the pack. Race distances vary from 3.2-5 miles for a Spartan Sprint all the way to a 28+ mile Ultra Beast The race tentatively slated for Kentucky is a Super Spartan with a distance of 8-10 miles.
Obstacles consist of vertical walls (with no footholds or ropes), climbing ropes, long (like really long) barbed wire crawls, sandbag carries, several technical obstacles and a signature spear throw. Spartan makes no apologies for the difficulty of their races. Don't enter lightly, but if you want added challenge to your running then help Kentucky get its own Spartan Race by showing interest and pre-registering at their site. There is no obligation, but you won't want to miss it. Your first Spartan Race will be a memory like no other race you have ever run!
