Real food tips for runners
By: Kellie McKinney
Real foods—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats—are better for you than fortified products.
There is more to a carrot than just vitamin A. There are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients which work together and it's the whole package that promotes good health.
Here are a few quick tips to help you eat healthy as a runner.
1. Eat a variety of seeds, whole grains, beans, and nuts—which contain protein and essential fats.
2. Consume a variety of colored fruits and vegetables each day. Eating fruits and veggies supplies your body with vitamins, minerals, and the carbs it needs to fuel your running.
3. Eat a variety of plant foods with the skin. Apples , grapes, zucchini, potatoes just to name a few offer a variety of health benefits.
4.Eat eggs, poultry, or lean meats from free-range or grass-fed animals. By eating eggs, poultry, and lean meats, along with dairy products, runners can easily meet their increased protein needs .
If you're an early riser:
If you wake up two hours before your run, good options include oats, wholegrain toast topped with eggs or a nut butter, granola, whole grain bagels and freshly made smoothies.
If you prefer to get straight on the road , try a small snack with quick releasing energy for example- dried or fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or a trail mix.
