TSR Runner of the Week-Tammy Black
By: Kayla Dodd
Team TSR would like to recognize local runner, Tammy Black, as our Runner of the Week! If you have been to any local races over the past couple years, I am sure you have heard Tammy’s name mentioned as she crossed the finish line, or when she wins Overall Female Winner, at most races she runs in! Tammy has been on her running journey for 4 ½ years. With a current PR of 21:45, she has several medals and trophies to display!
Her first race was the Team Toni 5k in 2012, in downtown Huntington. The Team Toni race is very important to Tammy, as the race is put on each year in memory of her daughter, Toni Black. Tammy’s goal is to run races to help give back to other charities and causes, and do all of this in memory of her daughter Toni, who always had a big heart to give back to others, as people always did for her. Tammy is motivated to run by all of her friends, family and also by the memory of her daughter, Toni.
When asked one of the neatest things she has seen at a race, she said, “I was at a Rugged Maniac obstacle course in North Carolina, and a man who was Autistic, battled his way through 27 obstacles, as his friends and family pushed him along! Everyone around was chanting his name in amazement! This was an awesome experience to see people coming together.”
She is currently working towards the Marshall Half Marathon in November, in Huntington. A dream race that she would love to participate in is the Boston Marathon! Her favorite running/motivational quote is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.
Tammy’s best experience from running has been the healthy lifestyle that she has gained from running and training, and the wonderful people that she has been able to meet over the last few years.
Her favorite brand of running shoes are Brooks and her favorite piece of running gear is her ear buds. The furthest distance that she has ran so far is 7 miles, but with goals of running the half marathon and possibly the Boston Marathon one day, these numbers will increase.
Advice that she would give to a beginning runner is to not get discouraged. If at first you fail, just try try again. Also…don’t eat too many brownies!!
Running has truly changed Tammy’s life, because it has helped her to deal with the passing away of her daughter, Toni Black, who passed away from Brain and Lung Cancer in April of 2012. The memorial 5k each year, helps to keep Toni’s memory alive and it is truly awesome to see all of the love and support from friends, family and community members year after year.
Saturday, September 3rd, marked Tammy’s 100th race!!! We wish Tammy the best of luck on ALL of her running goals, TEAM TSR will see you at the finish line! Do you know someone who should be the TSR Runner of the Week? Comment below or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
