WHERE

Holly River State Park, begins on road in front of old picnic shelter (old pavilion), that is just down the road from park office - Hacker Valley, WV

Course

It is almost all on the Pickens road, a gravel road, and there will be traffic control.  It begins along the blacktopped road in front of the picnic shelter, (old pavilion), diagonally across from the park office/restaurant.  It is an out and back course - completely inside Holly River State Park's boundaries. It passes several small streams along the way, and is forested, (and thereby shaded), along the entire route.  It is gradually uphill for the first half then downhill on the way back, making for a nice, fast finish with the final, (and beginning) stretch on blacktop!  Course climbs approximately 225 feet in 1.55 miles then descends.  Bathrooms at the shelter and a porta pot right near the road by the start.

Shortly before the turnaround point on the Pickens road, there is a water station set up.

Entry Fees

ENTRY FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CLICKING DOWNLOAD ENTRY FORM ABOVE.  Let us know if problems with downloading the entry form and if you have problems, we can make sure you get yours another way.

For the most up to date information about the run/walk, see the information on Facebook at:   https://www.facebook.com/HollyRiverHustle5K/ . You may not need to be a Facebook member to see this information.  Just copy this Facebook link and paste into your browser.

If your registration form and payment is received in the mail (in the PO Box for the race), or by Tom Prall, or at the park office by August 21st, entry fees are $20 for runners and walkers 18 and above (with age based on race day AGE); and for those under 18, the entry fee is only $15.

If you register after August 21st, entry fees go up to $25 for adults 18 and over; and $20 for those under 18.  A T-shirt is ONLY guaranteed race day for those whose registration form and entry fee are received by the earlier preregistration date (August 21st).

You will have a much more relaxed race day if you have already registered and paid, and only have to pick up your race packet including bib, rather than having to fill out a registration form and paying the morning of the race.  Having registered before race day will also give you more time to talk to your old friends, make new ones, and even warm up a bit on the course.  You will be pinning your race bib, with your number on it, to the front of your shirt.  Pins and will be provided.

As well as downloading entry form from this site, and and mailing it, you can pick up an entry form and pay at the Holly River State Park office, or get one by contacting Tom Prall 304-924-6553 wvabooks@aol.com, who will accept payment too.  If paying by check, make check out to Holly River Foundation.  If mailing entry forms, mail to:  HRH, PO Box 2474, Buckhannon, WV 26201.

Age Groups

For 2022 5K  - Male and female, Under 9 (8 and under); 9 to 11; 12 to 14; 15 to 17; 18 to 29; 30 to 39, 40 to 49; 50 to 59; & 60 to 69, and 70 and over.    Race will be timed, and all paid, registered participants, runners and walkers, could win one award based on finish time (if you are in the top 3 overall, or by age group whether you walked or ran), AND are also entered to randomly win a prize in drawings after this event. No entrant is eligible to win more than one random prize or more than one award.  (You are entered when we tear off part of your bib after you cross the finish line, and it is important for timing and the drawing that we receive that from you immediately after you cross the finish line.)  Please don't switch bib numbers with other runners or walkers.  Prizes for the race that could be won randomly will be posted on Facebook, and some may be posted here on Tristate racer.   Race part of the activities of the non-profit Holly River State Park Foundation's Holly River Festival, this race is on Sunday, September 4th, 2022, and begins at 9:00 a.m.  NOTE:  THIS IS A NEW, EARLIER TIME.

Awards

Overall top 3 men and women; and top three in each age group, male and female, see above for age groupings.  In past races, we have awarded plaques for the top 3 men and women overall, with medals for the other top runners in each age group, and it is not yet determined what will be awarded this year.  Participants are not eligible for two awards, as is the race custom.

Charity Information

This run/walk is part of the Holly River Festival, which festival is one of the activities of the non-profit, 501(c)(3) Holly River State Park Foundation.  Part of the entry fee is used to cover the expenses of this race, including t-shirts and awards, along with some snacks and water, after the race.  In 2023, there is again an opportunity to make an additional donation to the Holly River Foundation when you enter.  A separate line on the entry form has a blank to note the amount of donation you are including with your entry fee.  You may also purchase additional T-shirts for $12 per shirt if you include this on your entry form with payment.   In this time of insufficient funding for the parks, consider an additional donation that can help the park, and enhance the quality of all of our experiences at the park.

We are looking for sponsors for this 5K in the form of monetary donations.  We average over 100 entrants with a good number of spectators.  We are also looking for hand crafted items, and gift certificates to businesses etc., to give out randomly to registrants for prizes.  Publicity will be given for those who donate.  Contact Angela at angela.msilman@gmail.com or Tom at wvabooks@aol.com or 304-924-6553 if you can help us.

The Foundation has made numerous things possible at the park, including the restoration of the Windy Gap School in 1991, paying for trail maps in 2011, and helping with reroofing expenses for the park office in 2015, building a walkway to the falls, along with many other projects over the 25+ year history of the foundation.

The Foundation thanks you for this.

More Information

If you have not previously sent in your registration form and payment, OR given it to Tom Prall, OR registered at the park office, registration is also held between 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. on race day in the picnic shelter (old pavilion) on Sunday, September 3rd, 2023 .  This is also the time all earlier and race day registrants are to pick up their race number (bib number) to pin on your shirt before the race, (pins provided), as well as picking up T-shirts and race packets.    Questions welcome at:  wvabooks@aol.com calling 304-924-6553.  (Do not use the form to ask questions at the bottom of this page - because to date it has not become operational and questions are not received.)  Carpooling is encouraged to ease the traffic and parking in the park.  Parking limited near the shelter, so additional parking around the office/restaurant, and in the swimming pool lot, and across the way at the Stanley Judd Anderson building parking lot, and down the road at the Carpenter Pavilion.  Bathrooms and portable toilets provided near the race start.

It is hoped that the park swimming pool will be open again in 2023 after the race.  There is a low admission charge to use the pool; however, so if it is open again in 2023, why not take a shower and a swim to relax and cool off after running or walking after the awards and prizes?  Entrants may also want to consider making reservations for cabins or campsites and staying down at the park the night before, to make for a more leisurely experience, especially if you are coming from very far away.

Water provided at a water station shortly before turnaround point of run.  Bring water for before and after race.  There are also faucets in the bathroom(s) in back of the pavilion and there may be an operable water fountain in front of the pavilion, right next to the start of the run/walk for a drink or to fill your water bottle.  Snacks provided after race.  It will take about a while to compile a list of award winners after everyone has finished, so around 10:45 to 11:00, awards ceremony is scheduled to begin.  An announcement across the street in the craft area will be made prior to the awards ceremony, enabling you to enjoy the craft area, and pick up a drink or concession by the park office while you are waiting.  (It has been found that the last walker arrives back in about an hour after the race begins.)  Have fun and good luck!

If you would like to volunteer for the race, please email Tom at wvabooks@aol.com or call me at 304-924-6553.  There will be volunteering opportunities - even if you plan to run or walk the race.  Thanks in advance and enjoy the event and the park!

Any announcements day of run/walk take precedence over this and any other information.  The Facebook site has the most updated online information.  This information on Tristate Racer updated 2/9/23
