Charity Information

We celebrate the Donut Run because of National Donut Day, which began in 1938 as a celebration of those who served donuts to troops during World War I. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, Salvation Army volunteers came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts," receiving free donuts right in the trenches. This run not only celebrates the hard work of The Salvation Army volunteers of the past, but also helps local communities today. All of the proceeds from this race go to The Salvation Army Portsmouth Corp's food programs. These include both a pantry and a hot meals program where individuals are served meals five days a week out of the corps. In 2014, with the help of the Donut Runners, The Salvation Army served 120,000 meals to the locals in Scioto County
