TSR Runner of the Week-Brenda Scott

By: Kayla Dodd

Congratulations to this week’s TSR Runner of the Week, Brenda Scott. She has been on her running journey for over 20 years now and is still going strong! Her first 5k was in Charleston, WV and was the Susan G. Komen 5k, in 2006. She holds several current PR’s: 5k-24:13, 10K-52:00, 13.1 (Half Marathon)-1:53, 26.2 (Marathon)-4:45 & 50K-7:40. WOW!!!!!!! Her current running goals consist of qualifying for the Boston Marathon! She is also trying to complete a marathon in every state. She said, “As of now, I have about 20 states completed so I am close to half way. I have completed 2 full Ironman races and 1 half Ironman and I am scheduled for 2 more this year.” She also would love to do a 50 miler race soon.

When asked what motivates her to run, she said, “Running is my Drug! I enjoy getting out and enjoying nature and feeling the high of endorphins kicking in. I also enjoy the running culture. I have met so many nice people who share a love of the sport. I have also helped others get into the sport!” One of the neatest experiences she has had at a race was at a Triathlon event. “I saw a woman competing in a triathlon who was in a wheel chair, because she didn’t have the use of her legs, she competed the race by using alternate devices. I love seeing people overcome adversity.”

Upcoming races on her calendar this year consist of the Big Sur California Marathon, Boulder Colorado Half Ironman and the Chattanooga, TN Full Ironman. Her dream races that she hopes to one day compete in are the Boston Marathon and the Ironman, Hawaii! Her favorite running/motivational quote is, “We don’t have to Run, We get to Run!!” She also has a second favorite quote, “When the Pain comes, you know what I do? I SMILE!” -Chris McCormack, two-time Ironman World Champion.

Brenda has had several great experiences from her running journey from over the years. She said, “Running to me is a metaphor for life. I’ve learned to keep going even when I don’t feel like it or when things get painful! I have met some very good friends from running also. The experiences I have had from running and from triathlons are really too numerous to count!!”

Her favorite brand of running shoes….well favorite brands are: HOKA’s for marathons, and Mizuno, Brooks and Saucony’s for shorter distances. She has had great experiences from all types of brands of shoes, depending on the running distance! Her must have item for runs are her mittens and hand warmers! “I have Raynaud’s Syndrome and anything below 55 degrees, I have to have them!” She also loves wearing items from the Velocity Sportswear line, which is local! Brenda is an ambassador and a member of the local team of athletes called the TRIMAFIA.

When asked what advice she would give to a beginner runner she said, “Just start slow and do what you can. Run a little, walk a little. Just keep adding distance until you’re running more than walking. Also, find a friend to go with you and hold you accountable.” This is all great advice, for any level of runner! As Brenda said earlier, running is a metaphor for life, running has opened new doors for her, pushed her to new fitness levels, introduced her to a great group of friends and allowed her to travel and see the country!!

Congrats to Brenda on all of her running accomplishments, Team TSR will see you at the finish line!
